Amid border tension, Defence Minister, Rajnath Singh meets Chinese Counterpart in Moscow

Amidst the ongoing border tension in Ladakh, Indian Defence Minister, Rajnath Singh meets Chinese Defence Minister General, Wei Fenghe in Moscow on Friday night (4/9/2020).

According to ANI, the call for the meeting was requested by the Chinese Officials in view of the ongoing clashes at LAC.

The meeting lasted for 2 hours and 20 minutes as tweeted by the Union Defence Minister’s Office. India has asked China to sincerely engage with it, to restore peace and tranquility in the border areas, through complete disengagement and de-escalation.

Speaking at the weekly briefing on Thursday, External Ministry’s spokesperson, Anurag Srivastava informed that the way ahead is negotiations, both through diplomatic and military channels. “The situation with China has been tense and India is continuously engaging with them at the military and diplomatic level,” said General MM Naravani, who visited Ladakh on Friday to review the situation.

India recently outflanked China by taking control of strategic height near Pangong lake’s southern bank. It prevented an attempt by the Chinese Army in entering into India’s areas near the southern bank of Pangong Tso near Chushul in Ladakh.

Indian Defence Minister, Rajnath Singh is on a three days visit to Russia, to attend the combined meeting with his Chinese counterpart, after two rounds of brigade-level and five rounds of Lieutenant-general level talks failed to yield any result.

Both the armies of the two nuclear Nations are in a standoff since April, after the Chinese army forcibly tried to infiltrate into Indian territories in Ladakh and Sikkim.

The situation escalated in June after 20 Indian soldiers were martyred in a violent clash against the Chinese troops in Galwan Valley. Further insights from today’s meeting are yet to be disclosed.
