Hima Das, a 20 years old from Dhing village, showcased praiseworthy performance throughout the year 2018 and secured herself a room amongst the top sprinters of India, now being the youngest to be nominated for the esteemed ‘Khel Ratna’ award by the State Government of Assam.
Dulal Chanda Das, Assam Sports Secretary of Assam on June 5th sent the recommendation letter to the Sports Minister of India.
In the run for the prestigious award, Hima would compete against Neeraj Chopra (Ace Javelin thrower), Vinesh Phogat (Wrestler), Manika Batra (Table Tennis player), Rani Rampal (Women’s Hockey Captain) and Rohit Sarma (Cricketer).
In 2018, alongside her brilliant performance during the U20 World Championship, Tampere, Finland, where she became India’s first track athlete to win global title, she also secured 4×400 mixed relay gold (upgraded) and women’s 4x400m gold at the Jakarta Asian Games adding to which she became recipient of Arjuna Award.
In the following year as well, she proved herself competent enough to win a number of gold medals at smaller events and was also invited to compete in the Doga World Championship from which she had to withdraw on account of a back injury.
She is an example for many in Assam. May she win the race of life
