R. Madhavan, Hindi film industry’s chocolate boy turns 50 today (June 1). Bollywood will always remember him as ‘Maddy’ or ‘Madhav Shastri’ – a role he played in Gautham Menon’s romantic-drama Rehnaa Hai Terre Dil Mein (2001). Rehnaa Hai Terre Dil Mein, abbreviated RHTDM, features Dia Mirza and Saif Ali Khan. Madhavan is not only an actor but also a writer and film producer. He mostly works in Tamil and Hindi language films. Madhavan has been rightly described as one of the few actors in India who can achieve pan-Indian appeal, having appeared in films from seven different languages.
The actor began his acting career with television guest appearances, including a role Banegi Apni Baat (1994). He finally gained recognition through the master Mani Ratnam’s romantic movie Alaipayuthey (2000). Madhavan developed a romantic image with Gautham Menon’s Minnale (2001, RHTDM was Minnale’s remake) and Madras Talkies’ Dumm Dumm Dumm (2001).
His entry (as a lead role in a Hindi film) in RHTDM was unsuccessful at the box office. However, his performance and the film received mixed reviews. The film belatedly gained popularity through screenings on television and subsequently developed a cult following amongst a young audience. The film worked wonders with the young audience, lovers and college-goers. Indian youth loved this film. The film even after so many years of its release remains fresh as flowers. Anupam Kher (Deendayal Shastri) plays Maddy’s lenient father, who helps him get his ladylove Reena Malhotra (played by Dia Mirza)
The film revolves around Maddy, Reena and Rajeev ‘Sam’ Samra (played by Saif Ali Khan). Maddy keeps waiting for ‘his type of girl’ until he sees Reena (dancing in the rain). His father helps him to go closer to Reena. Maddy, his father and friends come to know that Rajeev (Reena’s father’s best friend’s son) will arrive from the States for marrying her. Since Reena has not seen him (only once when she was eight years old) and will not recognise him, Maddy’s father advises him to enter Reena’s life as Rajeev. He has only five days in his hands (since Rajeev will arrive) to woo Reena. Things go well in those special five days. Reena falls for him. Things turn bad for Maddy when Reena comes to know about the truth. Rajeev is none other than Maddy’s college arch-rival Sam. How Maddy wins her back forms the later part of the movie. A happy ending, melodious songs, beautiful shots, witty one-liners and dialogues and comic timings of all the characters make RHTDM a must-watch even to this day. And songs? Each better than the other.
Ek ladki dekhi bilkul bijli ki tarah … one flash … ek chamak aur main apna dil kho behta … mujhe lagta hai mujhe us ladki se behad pyar ho gaya hai … bas ab ek hi tamanna hai … rehna hai uske dil mein
Sachcha pyar kabhi khali haath wapas nahi aata hai
Jis din insaan duniya ki kisi bhi ladki ko samajh gaya na … us din duniya swarg ban jayegi
Jab kisi ladki se pyar ho jata hai na … toh dil ke channel pe bas ek hi program chalta hai … “Just Mohabbat”
Galat waqt par, galat wajah se, galat jagah pe tune haath uthaya
Titanic mein nahin balki real life mein bhi … doobte ladke hi hai
Love wave ka signal pakad, receiver utha, aankrede ghuma … uske dil ki ghanti bajhegi dekhna
Agar kisi ladke ko film dekhni hai toh sirf ladki ke saath dekhni chahiye … nahi toh film ki insult hai, theater ki insult hai aur theater mein dekhne waali sari audience ki insult hai
Main is kisam ki ladkiyon ko badi achchi tarah jaanta hoon … baap decide karta hai ki kaunse school mein jaana hai … maa decide karti hai ki kitni chotiyaan bandhni hai … aur poori family decide karti hai ki kis ladke se shaadi karni hai
