Umeedd, an NGO from Silchar, which primarily works for the cause of preventing Child Sex Abuse, held a press conference on Wednesday (27th May, 2020), in their office, announcing their recent course of action.
A facebook post went online on 24th May, which shows a child of around 7 years, being sexually abused by a man of around 20-24 years. On the same day, at around 9 pm, a member of Umeedd, Monodeep, came across the facebook post. Umeedd immediately took action, drafted an FIR on the very next day and went live with it on facebook. According to the organisation, they went live in order to urge people not to share the inappropriate facebook post anymore, as legal actions are already being taken. Accordingly, they went to the Silchar Police Station at around 2 pm and lodged the FIR. On 27th May, the accused, whose name is Reep Deb (according to his facebook account), was arrested.
According to Shamik Chanda, the founder and secretary of Umeedd, it is evident from the video that the child was not new to whatever he was doing and that makes it even more unacceptable. Shamik further adds that they have found many photos from the facebook profile of the accused, which show him around other children too. Umeedd demands their medical tests and counseling to ensure that they go on to have a secured future.
The accused, in his statement to the Police, said that the child had his consent while doing so, which according to Shamik Chanda, is completely unbelievable. Although, a section of the society would eventually accept this statement; having said that, this must be termed as a “non-informative consent”, he added.
Ananya Choudhury, the President of Umeedd, claims that her mother had received calls asking her to prevent Ananya from lodging the FIR. Shamik added that they had been pressurised by multiple persons to dismiss the case, but they are well determined to continue with it.
It was informed during the press meet that 3 more cases of sexual abuse took place in Barak Valley since April. On 17th April, at Shivergul, a 50 year old man was accused to have molested a 9 year old girl; on 29th April, at Botertol, a 68 year old grandfather was accused to have raped his 9 year old grand daughter; on 15th May, at Kalibarichor, a 17 year old neighbour was accused to have molested a 5 year old child; and then the case Umeedd is dealing with, a 20-24 year old boy has been accused to have sexually abused a 7 year old boy.
During a period of time, when the whole world is locked in their houses, it is a matter of grave concern that such cases are taking place. This makes it evident, that even his/her own house is not a safe place for a child to live in. A data from NCRB says that, 109 children suffer sexual abuse everyday as in the year 2018.
